This remarkable original painting by acclaimed Cornish artist John Dyer captures a unique moment in British gardening history. Painted on location at Barleywood in 2002, during Alan Titchmarsh’s final summer at the celebrated BBC Gardeners’ World garden, it is an important and highly collectable work from the artist’s career.
In ‘Alan Titchmarsh and the Tree Ferns, Barleywood’, John Dyer immerses us in the extraordinary abundance of the garden. Layers of flowers, foliage and magnificent tree ferns fill the canvas, leading the eye through a blaze of colour towards the blue pavilion beyond. There, Alan Titchmarsh can be seen with his dog Grace, beside the pavilion where he would write his books.
Dyer’s distinctive use of vibrant colour and energetic mark-making perfectly captures the atmosphere of Barleywood at the height of summer. The composition is filled with discoveries, from the dense subtropical planting and brilliant flowers to the birds and animals tucked amongst the foliage.
John Dyer painted at Barleywood with Alan Titchmarsh in 2002 as part of his artist-in-residence work connected with the BBC Gardeners’ World garden. The resulting paintings provide a fascinating artistic record of a garden and period that became familiar to millions of television viewers.
This painting was subsequently featured in the book celebrating John Dyer’s work and retrospective exhibition, adding to its provenance and significance within the artist’s story.
