Gyllyngvase Beach is alive with the colour, movement and carefree energy of high summer in this joyful original painting by acclaimed Cornish artist John Dyer.
Viewed from the flower-filled cliff banks above the beach, the composition sweeps around the broad curve of golden sand and into the brilliant turquoise waters of Falmouth Bay. Towering blue agapanthus and masses of white daisies rise through the foreground, while palms and dense coastal planting frame the scene and emphasise the subtropical character of Falmouth’s shoreline.
The beach is busy with swimmers, sunbathers, families and dogs enjoying the warmth of the day. Colourful towels and windbreaks create a lively pattern across the sand, while paddleboarders and swimmers move through the shallows. Beyond them, sailing boats cross the deeper water beneath an expansive blue Cornish sky.
Gulls and puffins fly through the composition, adding humour and animation as the eye moves between the cliff banks, beach and bay. John’s energetic use of paint captures sunlight sparkling across the sea, the movement of the water and the constant activity of one of Falmouth’s best-loved beaches at the height of summer.
There is a touch of the coastal exuberance associated with Raoul Dufy in the bright sails, expansive water and celebratory colour, but the abundant narrative, wildlife and distinctive rhythm are unmistakably John Dyer.
