Painted by John Dyer in 2003 during a weeks painting residency with singer and rock star Kim Wilde.
At the end of Kim's garden is a wonderful meadow, that by late August is full of dried grasses. A path is cut through the grass and the rest is left for birds and wildlife. I sat amongst the grasses to paint this view looking back towards Kim's barn. The rich yellow golden sky with orange grasses and deep blues create a wonderful feel of warmth.

John Dyer’s original acrylic painting ‘Sunset Grasses in the Breeze’ is a spectacular celebration of garden planting, movement and evening light, inspired by Kim Wilde’s garden.
Painted on a 24 x 24 inch canvas, this original garden painting captures the vivid atmosphere of a late-summer garden at sunset. Tall ornamental grasses sweep and bend across the foreground, their orange, gold, pink and violet stems appearing to shimmer in the breeze. Behind them, a richly planted garden rises towards a characterful house, with tiled rooftops, an arched doorway, leafy trees and glimpses of soft blue distance beneath a glowing orange sky.
The painting is full of life. Black birds dart through the grasses and trees, while small white birds cross the warm sky, adding a sense of movement and sound to the scene. John Dyer’s expressive brushwork gives the grasses a wonderful rhythmic quality, creating the feeling of wind, warmth and late evening energy. The colour palette is bold and uplifting, with fiery oranges set against deep blues, purples and greens.
As one of Cornwall’s best-loved artists, John Dyer brings his distinctive sense of colour, storytelling and environmental connection to this unique garden painting. ‘Sunset Grasses in the Breeze’ is not simply a view of a garden, it is a joyful response to the atmosphere of a living landscape, where plants, birds, architecture and sunset light combine in a moment of natural theatre.
This one-off original painting would make a striking focal point for a sitting room, garden room, kitchen, hallway or contemporary interior. It is a highly collectable artwork for anyone who loves gardens, colour, nature and paintings that bring warmth and energy into the home.
