At the John Dyer Gallery, we celebrate a broader tradition of classical artwork. Our museum-quality prints span the Baroque, the Dutch Golden Age, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Japonisme, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau and early modern realism. Understanding each period is essential to appreciating the evolution and influence of classical artwork over time. The influence of ancient literature, including Greek and Roman texts, philosophies, and mythological stories, played a significant role in shaping classical art and its revival movements. This article explores what makes classical art enduring, highlights iconic artists whose work you can collect as open-edition prints from our gallery, and shows how these traditions continue to shape modern creativity, with many artists returning to classical traditions after exploring other movements.

Still life painting is a celebrated genre within Western art, focusing on the careful depiction of everyday objects—such as cut flowers, fruit, and household items—arranged in thoughtful compositions. These life paintings invite viewers to pause and appreciate the beauty found in the ordinary, transforming simple objects into captivating works of art. Still life artists use their skills to create scenes that range from highly realistic to boldly abstract, employing a variety of styles and techniques to express their unique vision. Whether through intricate detail or expressive brushwork, the goal of still life painting is to evoke a sense of wonder and reflection about the world around us. From classic arrangements to innovative contemporary interpretations, still life paintings continue to inspire both artists and audiences, with contributions from creatives across the globe—including renowned Melbourne-based artists—who push the boundaries of this enduring genre.

In the early 20th century, a small fishing village in St Ives, Cornwall, was home to a very special artist. Alfred Wallis was born in Devon and lived in various coastal towns, including Devonport and Penzance, before settling in St Ives. Alfred Wallis was a self-taught painter who had no formal artistic training and began painting at the age of 70. In his early life, he had a working background as a fisherman and in other manual trades, including jobs as a cabin boy and cook, later taking on odd jobs to make ends meet. Wallis painted from memory and imagination, often depicting port landscapes and shipping scenes inspired by his maritime experiences.
