Summer Colours on the River, Falmouth is a vibrant celebration of one of Cornwall’s most colourful harbours at the height of summer. Inspired by the ever-changing activity on the River Fal and Penryn River, John Dyer combines the familiar sights of Falmouth’s bustling waterfront with his joyful imagination, creating a painting that captures the warmth, colour and relaxed spirit of life by the sea.
The composition looks across the river towards Flushing, where colourful cottages line the waterfront beneath rolling green fields. Ferries and sailing boats weave their way across the sparkling water while visitors enjoy the harbour from every angle. In the foreground, swimmers cool off in the clear sea, rowing boats drift by and playful gulls skim the surface, bringing movement and life to the scene.
Framing the harbour are dramatic agaves, palms and exotic cacti that flourish in Falmouth’s mild maritime climate. These subtropical plants have become one of John Dyer’s signature motifs, reflecting the unique character of Cornwall’s south coast and the extraordinary gardens that thrive there.
