After completing his Last Chance to Paint – Land of the Tiger expedition in Pench, John Dyer continued travelling across India, exploring the country’s culture, architecture, colour and spiritual life.
Starlight over the Golden Temple, Amritsar, India captures the remarkable atmosphere of the Golden Temple at night. The illuminated architecture glows in rich golds and oranges against a deep blue, star-filled sky, while reflections shimmer across the sacred pool.
In the foreground, visitors gather at the water’s edge and a Sikh figure stands with a long staff, giving the painting a strong sense of place, ritual and human presence. Birds move across the night sky and the surface of the water is animated with reflected light and flashes of orange fish, bringing movement and life to the scene.
John was drawn to the extraordinary contrast between the warm golden architecture and the intense blue of the night. The complementary colours make the temple appear almost luminous, while the scattered stars, birds and reflected marks create a sense of wonder and stillness.
The painting forms part of John Dyer’s wider exploration of India following his work in Pench, moving from the wildlife and ecosystems of central India to the country’s extraordinary cultural and architectural landmarks.
Starlight over the Golden Temple is a joyful and atmospheric celebration of Amritsar, combining architecture, people, water, colour and light in John Dyer’s distinctive contemporary style.
