Painting Description
A major and highly significant painting from John Dyer’s career, ‘Painting the Colours of the World, Tresco’ is an exuberant celebration of the subtropical landscape of Tresco in the Isles of Scilly.
Towering palms, tree ferns and extraordinary exotic plants fill the foreground with intense colour and movement, opening onto a brilliant turquoise sea alive with sailing boats and seabirds. Figures wander through the garden beneath the foliage while the deep Cornish blue of the sky gives the painting its wonderful sense of warmth, space and escapism.
Painted with John Dyer’s characteristic energy and optimism, the large 100 × 100 cm canvas captures the extraordinary experience of looking through Tresco’s lush planting towards the surrounding Atlantic. Reds, yellows, greens and blues overlap and compete for attention, creating an immersive painting that seems to glow with colour.
This is an important work in the artist’s history. The painting was selected for John Dyer’s retrospective exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery, held from 20 April to 23 June 2018, and was chosen as the cover image for the accompanying book, ‘Painting the Colours of the World’.
