Music, sea and summer colour come together in this joyful original painting of the Minack Theatre by acclaimed Cornish artist John Dyer.
The painting was inspired by a Passenger concert that John and Joanne attended at the famous open-air theatre. Passenger stands at the centre of the stage with his guitar, performing to an animated audience gathered across the sweeping stone terraces. The title gently echoes one of his lyrics, giving the painting a personal connection to the evening.
Around the stage, the Minack’s extraordinary subtropical planting rises through the composition. Towering echiums, sculptural succulents and bold architectural leaves create a vivid foreground, while the theatre appears to tumble dramatically towards the sea.
Beyond the terraces, the white sands of Porthcurno can be glimpsed curving around the bay, edged by clear turquoise water and pale Cornish cliffs. The sea is alive with swimmers, sailing boats and fishing vessels, while dolphins leap through the water and mermaids glide beneath the surface. Gannets, gulls and puffins sweep across the deep blue sky, adding movement and life to this richly detailed coastal scene.
John Dyer captures not only the appearance of the Minack Theatre, but the feeling of being there. Music seems to travel on the Cornish breeze, the sea sparkles beyond the stage and the entire landscape becomes part of the performance.
