John Dyer’s original acrylic painting ‘The Flower Garden Antony House’ is a beautiful and historically significant garden painting, created live in the flower garden at Antony House in Cornwall for the ITV television series The Painted Garden.
Painted during spring, this 24 x 24 inch original acrylic on canvas captures the flower garden at Antony House in full seasonal splendour. Red and white tulips rise through the foreground, creating a joyful rhythm of colour and form, while a wheelbarrow and gardener introduce a charming narrative element to the scene. Beyond the hedge, the grand architecture of Antony House appears, giving the painting a wonderful sense of place and connecting the living garden to one of Cornwall’s most important historic houses.
This original painting is especially collectable because of its television and garden history. During April and May 2005, John Dyer was joined by an ITV film crew who filmed him painting in the gardens at Antony House and Tresco Abbey Garden. The footage formed part of The Painted Garden, an ITV Westcountry series exploring the gardens that have inspired artists across the region and beyond. The series was screened in October 2005 and celebrated the work of leading artists inspired by the colours, structures and atmosphere of gardens.
The programme also featured John’s wife, artist Joanne Short, and their daughter Martha-Lilly Dyer painting in Tresco Abbey Garden, making this painting part of a wider family and artistic moment in Cornish art history. Directed and produced by Grace Kitto, The Painted Garden included contributions from garden historian Toby Musgrave, art historian Sam Smiles and garden designer Penelope Hobhouse.
As an acclaimed garden painter and one of Cornwall’s best-loved artists, John Dyer brings his distinctive energy, colour and storytelling to ‘The Flower Garden Antony House’. The red and white tulips, gardener, wheelbarrow and glimpse of the house create a painting that feels alive with spring, work, beauty and place. It is both a joyful celebration of a Cornish garden and an important original artwork with documented broadcast provenance.
This framed original painting would bring colour, history and botanical joy to a sitting room, hallway, dining room, garden room or country interior. Strung with picture cord and ready to hang, it offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire an original John Dyer painting connected to Antony House, Cornwall’s garden heritage and ITV’s The Painted Garden.
