Painted en plein air at Daymer Bay, this luminous original painting captures the moment the tide begins to reclaim the broad sweep of golden sand.
John Dyer worked directly from the landscape, looking into the distinctive Cornish light as it shimmered across the Camel Estuary. Turquoise water flows through the bay in ribbons of blue, green and white, while swimmers enjoy the shallows and small sailing boats move across the channel.
In the distance, Padstow sits beneath softly patterned fields and rolling green hills. Gulls cross the open blue sky, adding movement above the estuary, while the changing tide creates shifting pools, sandbanks and reflections below.
Sea pinks and mallows rise through the foreground, framing the view with delicate notes of pink, purple and green. Their colour connects the beach to the surrounding coast and draws the eye into the painting.
The immediacy of working outside can be felt in every energetic brushstroke. Rather than presenting a fixed view, John Dyer captures Daymer Bay as a living landscape, shaped by wind, water, light and the activity of a summer day.
