Painting Description
Watching the Ferry go by, St Mawesis an original acrylic painting by acclaimed Cornish artist John Dyer, inspired by the peaceful waters of the Percuil River and one of Cornwall’s most iconic ferry journeys.
The composition looks across the estuary towards the white tower of St Anthony Lighthouse on the Roseland Peninsula. In the centre of the painting, the familiar St Mawes Ferry makes its return journey to Falmouth across the Fal River and Carrick Roads, decorated with colourful bunting and filled with passengers enjoying one of Cornwall’s most scenic crossings.
In the foreground, a couple relax amongst flowering echiums, agaves, palms and colourful coastal flowers as they watch the ferry glide past, accompanied by their small black dog. Around them, swimmers enjoy the calm water, rowing boats and yachts drift across the estuary, while puffins and playful gulls bring movement and humour to the brilliant blue Cornish sky.
John Dyer’s expressive brushwork and joyful use of colour transform this familiar view into a celebration of summer on the Fal. Thickly painted flowers contrast with broad passages of luminous blues and greens, while vibrant reds, oranges, pinks and whites create a rich story of colour that draws the eye through the composition. Rather than producing a literal record of the landscape, the painting captures the warmth, tranquillity and gentle rhythm of life on the Roseland Peninsula.
