Painting Description

A freshly gathered display of Cornish daffodils brings the optimism of spring into this jewel-like original oil painting by Joanne Short.

White, cream and golden yellow blooms rise from a distinctive two-handled ceramic vase, their slender green stems creating an elegant rhythm across the composition. Each flower has been simplified into a clear, graceful shape, allowing the daffodils to retain their individuality while forming a beautifully balanced arrangement.

Joanne places the flowers against a luminous turquoise background, framed by warm orange architectural lines. Beneath the vase, a richly patterned surface of deep blue, coral and soft violet introduces a strong decorative structure. The cool turquoise and blue tones heighten the warmth of the daffodils, creating a carefully considered story of complementary colour.

The elegant use of line, flat colour and pattern recalls the decorative clarity of Matisse, while the bold arrangement of colour connects naturally with the Cornish colourist tradition.
