Collector reviews for John Dyer's Original Paintings

Painting Description

Inspired by a walk the artist took along the Cornish coast, ‘Coastal Walk, Porthallow’captures the exhilarating moment when the path opens onto the village, beach and sea below.

John Dyer looks down through luxuriant coastal planting towards Porthallow’s sheltered cove. Palms, succulents and tall architectural leaves fill the foreground in vivid pinks, blues and greens, while walkers and their dogs make their way along the path. The elevated viewpoint gives the painting an immediate sense of discovery, inviting the viewer to share the artist’s first glimpse of the bay.

Below, the beach curves around clear turquoise water alive with swimmers, small boats and traditional fishing craft. People launch and retrieve boats from the shore, families enjoy the shallows and figures gather beside the sea. Gulls and puffins sweep across the brilliant blue sky, while more seabirds and a black dog appear among the foreground plants, adding humour and narrative throughout the scene.

The white cottages of Porthallow cluster beside the beach, their dark roofs and flashes of vivid red set against the richly wooded hillside. The elevated viewpoint, heightened colour and great sweeping curve of the bay bring a distant echo of David Hockney’s landscapes, in which roads, hills and shorelines become dynamic shapes that carry the eye through the composition.

John’s energetic acrylic marks make that movement entirely his own, leading us from the abundant foreground planting and winding path towards the sparkling sea and open horizon. Coral, turquoise, yellow, violet and fresh green combine to create a joyful story of colour, expressing the warmth and vitality of the day rather than simply describing the view.

The painting celebrates the particular pleasure of exploring Cornwall on foot, when a coastal path can suddenly reveal a hidden cove filled with boats, wildlife and summer activity. At 24 inches square, ‘Coastal Walk, Porthallow’ is a substantial statement painting that would bring colour, movement and the lasting memory of a Cornish adventure into a home.

John Dyer (born 1968)

"There is an innocence and freshness to John Dyer's art that follows a tradition in Cornwall that includes the paintings of Cornwall by Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, Fred Yates and Bryan Pearce. Rather than trying to record what he sees, John sets out to capture the 'essence' of his subject. The 'essence' of seagulls, cats, dogs, bobbing boats, or exploding fireworks communicate far more strongly through John's brushstrokes than they would if drawn more traditionally. It is this ability to capture the 'essence' of what is important that seems to appeal to his collectors who have shown great vision and originality in their own careers, such as Tim Smit, Alan Titchmarsh, Toyah Willcox & Kim Wilde."
