Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a French Post-Impressionist painter renowned for developing the techniques of Pointillism and Chromoluminarism. Born in Paris, Seurat was the youngest of three children. He began his formal art education at the École Municipale de Sculpture et Dessin. He later attended the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Henri Lehmann, a disciple of Ingres.
Seurat's early works were heavily influenced by his classical training, which focused on drawing from casts of antique sculptures and copying old master drawings. However, he soon moved beyond traditional techniques, influenced by contemporary optical theories and the works of the Impressionists, whom he admired for their use of light and colour.
Georges Seurat's most well-known piece, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (1884-86), is a prime example of his Pointillist technique. This method involves applying small, distinct dots of colour in specific patterns to form an image. The technique uses the viewer's eye to blend the colours optically, creating a radiant effect. This painting, currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, took two years to complete and demanded extensive preliminary sketches and studies.
Seurat's career took a significant turn with his work, "Bathers at Asnières" (1884). Despite being rejected by the Paris Salon, it found a platform at the inaugural show of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. This society, which Seurat co-founded, was a crucial step in providing alternative exhibition opportunities for avant-garde artists, cementing his role as a champion of innovative art.
Seurat's life was tragically cut short at the age of 31, possibly due to meningitis or pneumonia. However, his brief career was marked by a series of groundbreaking innovations. His unique techniques and theoretical approach to colour and form revolutionized the art world, leaving an indelible mark on subsequent generations of artists. His legacy as a key figure in the development of modern art is a testament to the enduring influence of his work.

Thank you for the really wonderful print,it arrived safely and it was packed so well. This is a 50th birthday gift for my daughter who did this walk last year with her Dad. I know that she really enjoyed this day so I thought that it would be a lovely reminder for her. Once again thank you so much. At the moment it is in being framed ready for her birthday on 30th June.
Joanna Short's poster of St Anthony-In-Meneage is a companion piece to her Helford poster which we also purchased. The colors are cheerful, and it reminds us of our days in Cornwall and the lovely walk to St. Anthony.
My husband and I have travelled to Cornwall from the United States a number of times through the years. Our favorite spot is Helford where we were fortunate enough to stay in a rental cottage. Joanne Short's poster brings back our memories of that lovely place. The colors are beautiful.
I’m so happy with the beautiful picture - it captures perfectly the memories of wonderful holidays with our children in Cornwall.
John was delightful to deal with when purchasing this picture and delivery was super fast. Framed beautifully.
Such a vibrant, fun painting. Very different from most of the items in my collection but felt a need of something a bit irreverent & cheery 😊.
Painting extremely well packaged - perhaps a little too much so, as I struggled to separate the packing for recycling.
Thank you for such a colourful outlook on life!
Such a Wonderfull, colourful composition of the Helford river .which every day evokes wonderful memories of our visits to this beautiful area of Cornwall.

I'm absolutely delighted with my privately commissioned painting. I wanted to buy something special and particular for my sons up and coming wedding and when I saw Johns work online, I knew it would be perfect. A really delightful man, and a wonderfully charming and personal end result. I'd do this again in a heartbeat. Thank you John. Karen

Looks great, good match and contrast to JDs 2025 print we also have.
Beautiful print, vivid colours, wonderful depiction of St Ives. Just getting it framed, so not seen in situ yet. Already have one of Truro, which I adore.
Love the painting. Arrived safely packed and kind notes from John. Loved the whole experience and the painting brings a bit of seaside feeling into our living room.
Just received the cushion I ordered, it’s absolutely gorgeous. I chose the suede finish and it’s so soft and the colours are really vibrant. It’s well made and beautifully finished.
