Above the lake, delicate snow flurries drift across the scene, settling gently against the snowy mountain peaks and reminding us of the crisp, rarefied air of the Peruvian Andes.
In the terraces below, John paints an energetic celebration of Peruvian culture. Llamas wrapped in beautifully patterned blankets stand amongst farmers tending their fields, while guinea pigs explore the harvest terraces and nestle near the brightly coloured textiles laid out beneath them to dry the potato harvest. Boats glide quietly over the shimmering water, and flamingos lift into the star-filled night sky, adding a sense of movement and wonder to the painting.
