Painting Description

‘Spring Tide, Coverack’ celebrates the arrival of spring on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula, where a brilliant display of daffodils overlooks the sheltered harbour and turquoise sea.

Joanne Short has framed the view with bold white narcissi and golden yellow daffodils, their sweeping stems and trumpet-shaped flowers filling the foreground with seasonal colour. Beyond them, Coverack harbour curves around the water in bands of warm orange, pale stone and deep blue-grey, leading the eye towards the cottages clustered above the rocks.

Small fishing boats and sailing boats rest across the harbour, their simplified shapes and bright reflections creating a gentle rhythm through the composition. The high spring tide brings the sea close to the harbour walls and rocky shoreline, filling the bay with luminous tones of aqua, turquoise and soft green.

Joanne’s distinctive colourist approach transforms this much-loved Cornish village into a carefully balanced story of colour. The warm oranges and yellows of the flowers, walls and boats glow against the cooler blues and greens of the sea and sky, capturing the freshness and optimism of Cornwall in spring.
