Painting Description

A glorious sweep of red poppies fills the foreground of this vibrant original oil painting of Polly Joke, West Pentire in Cornwall by Cornish artist Joanne Short.

The flowers rise in abundance across the lower half of the canvas, their rounded petals and dark centres creating a rich decorative rhythm against fresh green foliage. Beyond them, the beach curves around the bay in broad bands of warm sand, turquoise water and white-edged waves.

Two colourful fishing boats move across the deeper blue sea, adding a gentle narrative to the open water. In the distance, the green headland rolls towards the coast, its contours simplified into flowing shapes that echo the movement of the waves below.

Joanne’s elegant use of line holds the composition together, from the stems and petals of the poppies to the sweeping shoreline and layered hills.
