Painting Description

Subtropical flowers frame a luminous view across Falmouth Bay in this striking original oil painting by Cornish artist Joanne Short.

Painted from Castle Beach, the composition looks across turquoise water towards Pendennis Castle and the distant St Anthony Lighthouse on the Roseland Peninsula. White-sailed boats travel through the bay, following elegant curved lines that suggest the movement of tides, wind and water.

The foreground is filled with the luxuriant planting that flourishes along Falmouth’s sheltered coast. White and violet agapanthus rise beside golden red hot pokers and sculptural aeoniums, their carefully simplified forms creating a rich decorative screen between the viewer and the sea.
