Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a French Post-Impressionist painter renowned for developing the techniques of Pointillism and Chromoluminarism. Born in Paris, Seurat was the youngest of three children. He began his formal art education at the École Municipale de Sculpture et Dessin. He later attended the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Henri Lehmann, a disciple of Ingres.
Seurat's early works were heavily influenced by his classical training, which focused on drawing from casts of antique sculptures and copying old master drawings. However, he soon moved beyond traditional techniques, influenced by contemporary optical theories and the works of the Impressionists, whom he admired for their use of light and colour.
Georges Seurat's most well-known piece, "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" (1884-86), is a prime example of his Pointillist technique. This method involves applying small, distinct dots of colour in specific patterns to form an image. The technique uses the viewer's eye to blend the colours optically, creating a radiant effect. This painting, currently housed at the Art Institute of Chicago, took two years to complete and demanded extensive preliminary sketches and studies.
Seurat's career took a significant turn with his work, "Bathers at Asnières" (1884). Despite being rejected by the Paris Salon, it found a platform at the inaugural show of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. This society, which Seurat co-founded, was a crucial step in providing alternative exhibition opportunities for avant-garde artists, cementing his role as a champion of innovative art.
Seurat's life was tragically cut short at the age of 31, possibly due to meningitis or pneumonia. However, his brief career was marked by a series of groundbreaking innovations. His unique techniques and theoretical approach to colour and form revolutionized the art world, leaving an indelible mark on subsequent generations of artists. His legacy as a key figure in the development of modern art is a testament to the enduring influence of his work.

Have walked this coastal path from St Agnes to Chapel Porth and back countless time. I am now pleased that this fabulous print is the first thing I see every morning. Beautiful, happy colours. Nice frame. I’m now planning of ordering one of Mount’s Bay by same artist.
Such a vibrant, pretty piece. I visited Fowey Harbour recently and was looking for a small keepsake to have with me back in the U.S. Shipping abroad was seamless and I received this item quite quickly. I've had many compliments since putting this on my phone and am happy to be reminded of a wonderful trip to a magical place this summer.
