Paintings of Somerset

Somerset Art Gallery

View original fine art paintings from our online Somerset Art Gallery collection featuring the beautiful landscapes, towns, and villages of Somerset. All of our artists have been inspired by the Somerset landscape for many years, with views of the Somerset Levels, Glastonbury Tor, and the beautiful city of Wells being among their favourite subjects to paint. Discover Somerset paintings by artists John Dyer, Ted Dyer, and Joanne Short. We are sure that our art buyers will be inspired by the many interpretations and views of the Somerset landscape.

Artist John Dyer was born in Ruishton in Somerset and spent his early years in Creech St Michael, where his father, artist Ted Dyer, lived and worked from the old vicarage. Even at the age of five, John explored the Somerset landscape with his father on misty mornings, discovering the colours, atmosphere, and wildlife of this remarkable county.

John Dyer and his wife, fellow artist Joanne Short, own a house in Wells, Somerset, and regularly visit the county to paint and gain inspiration for their art. Joanne Short is the official artist for Visit Somerset, and her paintings of the area have been featured on the official Visit Somerset visitor guides.

“Somerset will always hold a special place in my heart. It has inspired my father, Ted Dyer, for a lifetime of paintings and art, and in recent years I have had the joy of exploring and living in Somerset again. I have very fond memories of discovering the stunning Somerset countryside as a small boy with my drawing book, ‘Eye Spy’ books, and camera. The views across the Levels, with the mist and willow trees, are spectacular and a real highlight of our wonderful country.”John Dyer

When artist Joanne Short paints Somerset, she does so as a local artist. Living in Wells has given her art a strong connection with the county and England’s smallest city. The architecture of Wells, the music drifting from the pupils of Wells Cathedral School along Vicars’ Close, and the beautiful gardens of the Bishop’s Palace have all provided rich inspiration for her paintings.

All of the original art featuring Somerset is available to view here, and all three artists also consider commissions based on the landscapes of Somerset. Visit Somerset is one such organisation that has commissioned new art, resulting in a beautiful and iconic image for their campaign.

For a different price point, we also offer a wonderful collection of fine art poster prints and signed limited-edition art prints of Somerset for art buyers to browse and shop online.
