Pool of Abundance, Taj Mahal, India is a beautifully balanced original oil painting by Joanne Short, inspired by the extraordinary symmetry, gardens and reflective pools of the Taj Mahal.
Joanne places the monument at the centre of the composition, rising in cool whites and soft greys against a clear blue Indian sky. The long central pool draws the eye directly towards the Taj Mahal, while its reflection introduces a quiet sense of depth and calm.
In the foreground, bold orange flowers fill the lower edge of the painting, creating a vivid contrast with the greens of the gardens and the blues of the sky and water. The strong outlines, simplified forms and carefully structured composition are characteristic of Joanne Short’s distinctive style.
The painting was created following Joanne’s journey through India as part of the wider Last Chance to Paint – Land of the Tiger expedition, which she helped to deliver alongside John Dyer. After the expedition work in Pench, Joanne continued travelling through India, responding in paint to the country’s architecture, colour, culture and extraordinary sense of place.
The title Pool of Abundance reflects both the famous water garden leading towards the Taj Mahal and the richness of colour, planting, architecture and atmosphere that surrounds one of India’s most celebrated landmarks.
Rather than painting the Taj Mahal as a purely architectural subject, Joanne brings it into a decorative, joyful and highly personal visual language. The result is elegant, colourful and immediately recognisable, while retaining the serenity and order that make the Taj Mahal so extraordinary.
