Flowers at First Light, Taj Mahal, India is a luminous original oil painting by Joanne Short, capturing the extraordinary calm and beauty of the Taj Mahal in the fresh light of morning.
The great monument rises softly against a clear turquoise-blue sky, its domes and minarets picked out in warm creams, peach and delicate lilac-grey. Joanne frames the architecture with a flowering garden in the foreground, where rich violet-blue blooms create a vivid contrast with the green lawn and pale stone of the Taj Mahal.
The composition is characteristically elegant and decorative, with Joanne’s strong outlines, simplified shapes and carefully balanced colour giving the scene a timeless quality. The flowers are not simply foreground detail; they create a sense of arrival, placing us within the gardens and drawing us gently towards the building beyond.
The painting was created following Joanne’s journey through India as part of the wider Last Chance to Paint – Land of the Tiger expedition, which she helped to deliver alongside John Dyer. After the expedition work in Pench, Joanne continued travelling through India, responding in paint to the country’s remarkable architecture, colour and culture.
Flowers at First Light captures a quieter side of the Taj Mahal — not the grandeur of a crowded landmark, but the stillness and clarity of early morning, when the gardens, flowers and architecture seem to exist in perfect harmony.
This original 12 x 12 inch oil painting is a joyful and refined contemporary response to one of India’s most celebrated places.
