“I like to think that my paintings reveal a moment of calm and tranquillity amidst a hectic world, something to remind us of our holidays and rare moments of relaxation.”

Quotes

“Your fantastic paintings not only brought the apartment to life, but also put the energy of the Riviera indoors!”
Toyah Willcox

“They have that rare quality of being able to transport me to those magical Cornish places of holiday dreams, magical light and brilliant flowers.”
Alan Titchmarsh MBE

Joanne Short is one of Cornwall’s most established artists, and her paintings are truly unique in their style and construction. They bring to us a strong but gentle view of her world and focus on the beauty, pattern and life that is found in the landscape.

She featured in the ITV series ‘The Painted Garden’ and many collectors marvelled at the way she confidently commits paint to her canvas en plein-air.

Joanne’s approach to painting is refined and uncluttered. She is concerned with the colour and pattern quality within her overall compositions. A patchwork of mark making including stripes, lines and dots combine in harmonious colour groups within her bold pictures of still lives and landscapes.

Joanne is a member of the acclaimed Newlyn Society of Artists in Cornwall and has exhibited in Cork Street, London, Italy, Monaco and leading galleries in the South West. She has been published worldwide by the Art Group and is one of Cornwall’s best-known artists, often working outside surrounded by the landscape.

Joanne Short was born in Oxford in 1967. Joanne Short’s paintings are truly unique in their style and construction. They bring to us a strong but gentle view of Joanne’s world and focus on the beauty, pattern and life that is found in the landscape of Cornwall.

Joanne initially studied at Falmouth School of Art for two years in 1988 before gaining a first-class degree in Fine Art and ‘Decoration’ from the Academy of Fine Art in Frosinone, Italy.

Her studies in Italy were quite different from an English art school – with detailed research into restoration and anatomy – all in Italian and with many oral examinations; she is now a fluent Italian speaker.

During the course, Joanne was chosen to represent the college by exhibiting in Genoa, Palermo and Rome. She was also selected to represent the college in an annual exhibition organised in Florence for all Italian Academies, each choosing only three of its best pupils.

In 1991 Joanne was selected to participate in an international exhibition with 15 other young artists in a tiny mediaeval village, Fumone, in the county of Lazio. Joanne was awarded second place and a special mention by the Art Critics in the catalogue.

Joanne moved back to her native Cornwall, and in 1996 she had a one-woman show ‘Symbols of the Sea’, culminating several years of work including etchings, paintings, constructions, site-specific pieces and poetry.

Her work from this point has concentrated exclusively on painting. Joanne’s approach to painting is simple and uncluttered. She is concerned with the pattern quality within her overall compositions – a patchwork of mark making including stripes, lines and dots which combine in harmonious groups within her bold pictures of still lives and landscapes.

Her paintings have been widely collected and admired.
