Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929) was a distinguished British artist who painted nude youths and maritime scenes. Born in York, Tuke studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he honed his skills before travelling extensively in Italy and France. During his time in Paris, he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens and was influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage and his plein air techniques. He also formed connections with prominent artists like John Singer Sargent.
Tuke was a founding member of the New English Art Club in 1886, and he later became associated with the Newlyn School of Artists in Cornwall. In 1885, he settled in Falmouth, Cornwall, where he converted a fishing boat into a floating studio. This allowed him to develop his signature style of painting boys swimming, fishing, and boating, often in the nude, capturing the natural light and colours of the Cornish coast.
His painting "August Blue" (1893-94) is among his most famous works, depicting nude youths bathing from a boat. Tuke's approach to these subjects was noted for its delicate handling of light and colour, and while his works evoked a sense of intimacy, they were not explicitly sexual. His ability to capture the essence of light and movement in water brought him considerable acclaim.
Tuke also excelled in portraiture, with notable works including a portrait of T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"). Throughout his career, he balanced his figurative work with maritime paintings, often depicting ships in sail with great accuracy and affection. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1914, Tuke enjoyed both critical and financial success during his lifetime, enabling him to travel widely and further refine his artistic techniques.
After he died in 1929, Tuke's reputation waned but was revived in the 1970s, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, which recognized his work's significance and sensitivity. Today, his paintings are celebrated for their vibrant colour, natural light, and nuanced portrayal of youthful subjects and maritime themes.

A stunning picture that was efficiently delivered to Amsterdam in a very short time frame.
From order to delivery the process was fast and efficient, especially as it was to the Netherlands.
