Our first in-person exhibition since the pandemic has been a huge success. The exceptional exhibition exhibited a wide range of our gallery paintings next to the latest paintings of Cornwall by all our artists and a unique collection of new paintings from Kenya that artists John Dyer and Joanne Short completed during and after their recent expedition for our acclaimed Last Chance To Paint educational project.
We also exhibited a stunning small collection of new paintings by Cornish artist Ted Dyer exhibited alongside his extraordinary recent works.
The paintings in the exhibition all have a solid link to the environment and biodiversity. The African canvases focus on endangered wildlife and the Maasai tribe and culture threatened by climate change. The Cornish canvases celebrate the wildflowers and ocean life that can be found around the coast.
John Dyer has also been appointed the Artist in Residence for the Tall Ships Races 2023. His official painting will be displayed in the exhibition celebrating this fantastic event.
The exhibition included one of John Dyer's largest-ever paintings, a stunning painting of St Michael's Mount with a glimpse of underwater life and even a humpback whale! The painting is 48 x 60 inches on canvas and is spectacular.
Joanne Short exhibited some of her most significant ever oil paintings, with an extraordinary painting of 80 cm x 80 cm on canvas of the gorgeous Tresco Abbey Gardens and a stunning 100 cm x 100 cm canvas of Helford Passage.
The Crypt Gallery is situated beneath the church building and Mariners Gallery of the St Ives Society of Artists in Norway Square, St Ives - just up from the harbour Wharf road on Church Place. In the 1940s, the Crypt Gallery became the base for the modernist and avante-garde artists Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon and Sven Berlin - collectively known as The Crypt Group. On our blog, you can read more about buying paintings, more exhibition details and some of the Crypt gallery history.
