Jo Short and John Dyer are two of Cornwall’s best loved artists. Their work has now gained a strong international following.
Although their styles are uniquely individual and instantly recognisable, every place they visit throughout the world takes their work in new and exciting directions.
Both artists are able to absorb the joys and wonders of each area and can capture the true character of a locality. Their year on the Côte d’Azur has successfully produced some of their most exciting work.
The exotic flora, bright Mediterranean colours and spectacular landscapes have been interpreted by Jo and John in very different, but complimentary ways.
Jo skillfully captures the landscape in rich intricate patterns, weaving a tapestry of colour that delights the eye.
John captures the essence of a locality with great love and humour. Swimmers, sunbathers, dogs and seagulls are all portrayed with his characteristic zest for life.
The two artists share an amazing ability to paint pictures that can transform the atmosphere in positive ways.

not to be uplifted every time one enters

John Dyer possède un regard d’une innocence complète. Il magnifie la beauté de la nature. Dans sa vision idyllique des choses et des gens n’existe aucune agression, nulle attaque d’aucune sorte. L’art de John Dyer c’est le chant d’un enfant ! La chanson « J’ai du bon tabac, tu n’en auras pas… » est déjà une agression. Ici, il n’existe rien de tout cela. Son univers est lisse, étonnement serein, d’une tranquillité absolue.
L’art existe pour réveiller tout ce qui est bon dans l’être humain. S’il n’existait pas d’art qu’y aurait-il ? Qu’est ce qui resterait ? L’amour de la mère, la générosité du père ? Lorsque John Dyer pose son regard sur la nature, il fait en sorte que le beau qui réside en lui-même rencontre ce qui est beau chez l’autre. Même si les pics d’un oursin semblent agressifs, ils ne sont que des pics de défense. Il en est ainsi chez John Dyer…
La Méditerranée est le lieu de cet absolu chez l’artiste où la lumière et les palmiers, l’harmonie et la clarté sont partie intégrante de son univers de douceur. Pourtant John Dyer ne peint pas la mer des Latins mais les côtes du sud de la Grande Bretagne, le Devon, la côte blanche, Falmouth, Tresco. Il peint les sirènes des rivages glacés mais ce sont les palmiers du sud et les couleurs de Menton qui l’ont marqué et ont imprégné jusqu’au bout sa palette. Falmouth a troqué son habit de brume grise pour le génie chromatique azuréen. Peinture d’une éclatante vitalité, ample et libre, l’œuvre de John Dyer est un exemple de ce travail qui sort de l’être et fait exploser par son innocence et sa jeunesse la force du naturel.
John Dyer s’est aussi penché sur les rivages mentonnais. Aujourd’hui, il est en résidence à la villa Hanbury de la Mortola avec sa charmante épouse, Joanne Short, en temps que lauréat du fameux « Eden project ». Ils peignent dans les allées du merveilleux parc. C’est là, que je les ai vu travailler un jour que je visitai le jardin avec la British Association.
John Dyer habite au Winter Palace, sur les hauteurs de Menton, baigné dans un parc enchanteur qui devrait par sa magie l’aider à prolonger sa méditation.
