‘Rice Harvest Festival, Arles, Camargue’ is a joyful new painting that celebrates the traditions and vitality of southern France. Drawing on John Dyer’s long connection to Provence, where he lived and painted for several years, the canvas brings together the cultural and agricultural riches of the Camargue in a radiant vision of harvest time.
The rice fields in the foreground are plump and ready to harvest, their luminous green rows glowing beneath the night sky. Locals parade proudly on horseback, guiding the famous white Camargue horses as black bulls graze nearby. Flamingoes rise from the wetlands, adding a flash of pink that carries into the swirling constellations of Van Gogh-inspired stars above.
The artist uses the sweep of the Rhône River to divide the paddies from the historic townscape, a compositional device that leads the eye towards the glowing Roman amphitheatre at the heart of Arles. A band plays in the background, filling the town with music, while the festival unfolds across river and field. With his unique gift for ethnobotanical subjects, John Dyer unites the abundance of the rice harvest with a distinctive perspective on Arles, where agriculture, heritage and art history meet.
Dyer’s radiant palette and expressive brushwork transform the Feria du Riz of the Camargue into a canvas alive with rhythm and colour. This major work within Spirit of the Harvest offers collectors a richly layered celebration of biodiversity, culture and place.
