This luminous new canvas captures the richness of life in Provence, where farming, wildlife and heritage intersect. John Dyer paints the rice harvest as a scene alive with colour and narrative, bringing the agricultural traditions and biodiversity of the Camargue vividly to life.
In the flooded paddies, plump rice heads sway and glisten in the sunlight. White ducks paddle through the water, feasting on grains left behind by the harvesters — a centuries-old practice that also provides eggs and food for local communities. Riders on iconic white Camargue horses stride across the golden fields, symbolic figures who embody the guardianship of this unique landscape.
The salt flats stretch behind, filled with the unmistakable pink of flamingoes. Protected yet often regarded with ambivalence by farmers, these elegant birds thrive on rice grains and are sometimes driven away to safeguard the harvest. Above, they soar across a vast Provençal sky towards the radiant ochre walls of Aigues-Mortes, a fortified town whose history anchors the composition.
With expressive brushwork and radiant colour, Dyer combines agricultural detail with cultural and ecological themes. This major painting unites the rice harvest with the living spirit of the Camargue, offering collectors a richly layered work that is both celebratory, stunningly beautiful and thought-provoking.
