Her paintings are a celebration of the Cornish and English Countryside - its landscapes, flora, and fauna, although in this upcoming exhibition there are a small collection of paintings from her trips to New York and Kenya in the exhibition. Both Joanne Short and John Dyer have painted some of their most ambitious paintings for this exhibition, on a larger scale than they usually work, so if you have a large wall or want a feature painting this new collection could be a perfect buying opportunity for you.
Artist Joanne Short said about exhibiting at The Crypt Gallery:
"It is a dream come true exhibiting our paintings in the same place as such famous figures in the art world. For an artist it is the equivalent to a singer playing at the Cavern. Also, having a reason to paint larger paintings to fill the space is so exciting. The room is big, and it felt like the perfect opportunity to push the boundaries and make the most of the big walls. I usually prefer to work on a smaller scale, but this has felt like a breath of fresh air working to this scale in bold colours. Hopefully, these paintings will inspire our customers and whisk them away to the beauty of Cornwall in the summer"
The History of Fine Art at The Crypt Gallery
The Crypt Gallery played an important role in the history of the St Ives Art scene. After WWII, St Ives' already established group of painters, sculptors, and potters drew a wave of younger artists to Cornwall. This influx formed the much-lauded new school of abstract art that made St Ives internationally renowned as an artistic epicentre for avant-garde culture. This group of artists became the St Ives Society of Artists.
In the 1940's, the Mariner's Church Crypt served as a sanctuary for ambitious modernist and avante-garde artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, and Sven Berlin — this group became known as the Crypt Group - the work by this group featured some of Britain's most progressive artworks during that period, with their paintings, sculptures and drawings. These UK artists made an everlasting impression on the town of St Ives, which draws emerging artists to this day.

This exhibition, featuring original pieces by renowned Cornish artists Joanne Short, John Dyer, and Ted Dyer, promises to be an exceptional event that art lovers will not want to miss. So, if you are passionate about art and want to experience the rich history of St Ives, head down to The Crypt Gallery from May 13th 2023 at 6pm until 19th May to immerse yourself in a world of creativity and inspiration.
