iPad Art is a unique new genre of art that artist John Dyer has embraced as part of his working process. John Dyer uses the app Procreate on his Apple iPad. Procreate sponsored the artist to travel to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to create a unique series of iPad works of art. Artist Joanne Short has also used Procreate on iPad to create the unique artistic illustrated map of Somerset for Visit Somerset.

The app Procreate on iPad has enabled me to create new artwork worldwide where traditional media would have been tricky to use. Using the iPad to draw whilst onboard a fast-moving canoe in the Amazon rainforest, surrounded by orangutans in the forest of Borneo, sailing on a Tall Ship through London and in the hot, dry conditions of Corfu in Greece, has been a liberating experience. I use my own digital brushes that are carefully crafted using actual brush strokes from my original paintings, and I set them up to work like wet acrylic paints on my exact canvas, watercolours on watercolour paper, and 6B pencils. The resulting iPad drawings and art are luxurious, full of colour, have precise brush strokes and make the most beautiful museum-quality fine-art prints. They are pieces of art that would otherwise not exist.

John Dyer

Using iPad and Procreate, John Dyer hosts three webinars a year and teaches over 60,000 children globally about art and the environment. Find out more and watch the iPad art created on the webinar replay section of Last Chance to Paint.

Dyer's quick adoption of the Apple iPad represents a continuation of the artist's fascination with innovative tech from many years earlier, using BBC Micro, Apple Macs and Quantel paintboxes to create artwork. With an iPad and Apple Pencil, John Dyer can work outdoors in various situations conveniently without having to lug heavy materials and develop artworks that make the most beautiful museum-quality art prints to last for generations.

All artworks below are painted and drawn on iPad with the Procreate app.
