Joanne is a new artist to the Ravensburger puzzle range. We asked Sarah Stevens, the product manager at Ravensburger, a few questions about puzzles:
What is the history of Ravensburger?
Ravensburger was founded in 1883 by Otto Robert Maier in the town of Ravensburg in southern Germany. Maier started as a book publisher and then expanded into games and puzzles. The company continues to develop into exciting new product ranges like CreArt and Gravitrax and now owns the wonderful BRIO wooden toy brand. The company remains family-owned.
When choosing art for puzzles what are the main things you consider?
Puzzlers look for excellent colour definition, lots of detail and interesting subjects. There’s a lot more to it than that, but I don’t want to bore anyone!

What attracted you to Joanne Short's art to use on a puzzle?
I have been a fan of Joanne’s work for ages and love her fresh, unique style and brilliant use of colour. I especially like her poster art as it reminds me of vintage work, but uses vibrant colours and has a contemporary and unique twist.

Which of the London paintings that feature on the puzzle do you like the most and why?
That’s difficult as they are all great. If pushed, I’d say Tower Bridge because I love the way that the strong diagonal of the River Thames leads you to the bridge. I also like the way the flowers create interesting shapes against the water. It could be a very static scene, but it’s not. It’s fantastic composition. Thanks Joanne!

Is a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle good for your brain?
Puzzles can help your brain in lots of ways and consumer feedback tells us that assembling puzzles is a 'happy place' for many people. Puzzles can help with stress, anxiety and depression because you have to focus so much when assembling the pieces and you can switch off from every day worries. You can also 'escape' into a puzzle picture, perhaps imagining yourself within the scene, inspiring future visits or remembering when you visited the place depicted. There’s a great sense of achievement throughout the whole process, especially when you finish.

Do you have any top tips for doing a puzzle?
There are many different ways to assemble a puzzle. I start by sorting the edge pieces and whilst looking for these I also start to sort the other pieces by colour. Once all the edge pieces are found, I’d assemble these and start to look for very distinct areas of colour (like the yellow flowers in the Tower Bridge image or the red poppies in the Westminster section). Having a set of puzzle sorting trays helps me a lot with the sorting process. But every puzzler is different; there’s no right or wrong. It’s what works for you.
