Harold Harvey

Harold Harvey: A Distinguished Cornish Painter

Harold Harvey (1874-1941) was a prominent British painter associated with the Newlyn School and the Lamorna group. Born in Penzance, Cornwall, Harvey's work predominantly features the landscapes, people, and everyday life of his native region. His father, Francis McFarland Harvey, was a bank clerk, and Harold was home-schooled during his early years.

Harvey's formal art education began under the tutelage of Norman Garstin at the Penzance School of Art. From 1894 to 1896, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, further refining his skills at the Académie Colarossi and Académie Delécluse. Upon returning to Cornwall, he established himself as a key figure in the Newlyn School, known for its focus on realism and depicting rural and maritime life.

In 1911, Harvey married fellow artist Gertrude Bodinnar, who initially posed for him and later became an accomplished artist herself. The couple settled in Newlyn, becoming integral members of the local artistic community and maintaining friendships with artists like Laura Knight and Ernest Procter.

Harvey's initial works were characterised by their portrayal of the everyday lives of Cornish fishermen, farmers, and miners. As time passed, his color palette became more vibrant, and his artistic style shifted towards a more ornamental approach, often showcasing elegant interiors and dynamic landscapes. He maintained a regular presence at the Royal Academy from 1898 until his passing in 1941, and his pieces were also featured in global exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale.

Harold Harvey's legacy is celebrated through numerous exhibitions, and his works are held in several prestigious collections, including the Royal Cornwall Museum, Penlee House, and the National Museum of Wales. His contributions to British art, particularly his depictions of Cornish life, continue to be appreciated and studied by art enthusiasts and scholars alike.
