Picture Perfect Plein Air
The Cornish Riviera is perfectly re-imagined by a Falmouth-based family of Cornish artists who boast legions of fans across the globe.
Probably very few visitors to Cornwall – or those who live here – don’t have some Cornish art in their homes. Whether a framed old map of the county, vibrant glass from its many makers or driftwood art – there is plenty to choose from that can brighten up your home.
Our new favourite place is Falmouth’s John Dyer Gallery. This lovely space features art
- by private appointment only coupled with a lively online gallery featuring stunning vibrant paintings and prints of Cornwall’s favourite spots – by a family of Cornish artists, which includes husband and wife team John Dyer and Joanne Short who practice the art of plein air painting – painting outside – and John’s father Ted Dyer who has been painting for 45 years and has become one of the UK’s most collectable artists. The family sell work from their lovely Edwardian gallery in Falmouth which has been home to the gallery since 2005.
We’ve chosen work by John and Joanne Short for our covers this month – depending on where you are buying your copy of Cornwall life will depend which one you get!
John Dyer is one of the UK’s most well- known post-modern plein air painters. His work is collected internationally and his paintings have been the subject of television programmes and a wide range of merchandise. His ethos has a strong environmental theme and his work aims to convey optimism, fun, life, joy, happiness - all the good things in life through his use of colour and style.
Joanne Short is one of the elite Newlyn Society of artists and has gained a huge following over the past 25 years of exhibiting in Cornwall and London. Her colourist work offers a gentle view of the world as she sees it and focuses on the beauty, pattern and life that is found in the landscape.
Ted Dyer is one of the UK’s best known contemporary artists who has been exhibiting for more than 45 years. He has lived and worked for most of his life in the West Country, moving to Cornwall in 1972 where he focused on painting, capturing the quality of light, giving his work a distinctive character that has earned him the moniker of The Cornish Impressionist. Ted tends to work outside to create drawings and then retreat into his studio to create oil paintings.
‘Joanne and myself will take on the landscape directly with large canvases en plein air in
the warmer months from May to September when Cornwall is at its best,’ explains John.
The gallery is involved in many environmental projects and works to inspire young people and children to express themselves through art.
A gallery by appointment only is not so unusual with larger galleries and for John Dyer it works well.
‘Our clients get to meet myself or Joanne which they really like when purchasing paintings,’ he explains. ‘We often get asked to pose for photos with our happy customers when they collect their paintings, which is fun.’
