The picturesque beauty of the Cornish coast first lured artists to St Ives in the late nineteenth century. Victorian artists like Louis Grier and James McNeill Whistler frequented the Sloop Inn in St Ives, alongside their pupils, Walter Sickert and Mortimer Mempes. The extension of the Great Western Railway to West Cornwall further established the area as a hub for artists, making the stunning landscape more accessible.

Artists were not only drawn to the breathtaking scenery of St Ives Bay and its charming fishing village, but the town’s unique light also significantly influenced the development of its art scene. The sparkling light and pristine ocean colours of St Ives profoundly affected the unique painting style that emerged. The Porthmeor Studios that are right on the beach with a stunning view of the sea and beach, for example, were utilised by St Ives artists to create a substantial amount of their art, and the studios have been restored and remain in use today.

In 1938, the beauty of St Ives Bay and the surrounding landscape led to the foundation of the St Ives School of Painting. This art school was initiated by St Ives artists Albert Julius Olsson and Louis Grier and was later founded by prominent figures in British art, Borlase Smart and Leonard Fuller. The school provided a platform for artists to come together and develop their skills, fostering artistic growth and development.
