Limited Edition Print. 'Beagle in the Bay, Falmouth' by Cornish Artist John Dyer. Cornwall Art Gallery Print

Available options: Unframed

This Cornish art print of Falmouth is taken from one of John Dyer's official paintings for his residency for the Darwin 200 celebrations in the UK.

The artist has cleverly shown Darwin's tall ship, the Beagle, sailing into Falmouth where she originally returned on her famous voyage.

A beagle dog watches from a boat and a diverse range of bird species and fish (including mermaids!) join the party. John captures the underwater view, a diver and many sea creatures too.

"I was asked to be the artist in residence for the official Darwin 200 celebrations and this Cornish painting, that the print is reproduced from, was one of the pieces painted during my residency. It brings together the feel of the tall ships in Falmouth with Darwin's homecoming. Darwin returned from his epic journey and docked in Falmouth in his boat the Beagle - it was the equivalent of the moon landings in those times and caused quite an event. The painting depicts the Beagle sailing into Falmouth with a menagerie of tropical birds following and it also has a Beagle and Brian Stewart, the acclaimed curator of Falmouth Art Gallery at the time, depicted in the small boat too! A celebration of the past and present."
