Harold Harvey (1874-1941) was a prominent British painter associated with the Newlyn School and the Lamorna group. Born in Penzance, Cornwall, Harvey's work predominantly features the landscapes, people, and everyday life of his native region. His father, Francis McFarland Harvey, was a bank clerk, and Harold was home-schooled during his early years.
Harvey's formal art education began under the tutelage of Norman Garstin at the Penzance School of Art. From 1894 to 1896, he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, further refining his skills at the Académie Colarossi and Académie Delécluse. Upon returning to Cornwall, he established himself as a key figure in the Newlyn School, known for its focus on realism and depicting rural and maritime life.
In 1911, Harvey married fellow artist Gertrude Bodinnar, who initially posed for him and later became an accomplished artist herself. The couple settled in Newlyn, becoming integral members of the local artistic community and maintaining friendships with artists like Laura Knight and Ernest Procter.
Harvey's initial works were characterised by their portrayal of the everyday lives of Cornish fishermen, farmers, and miners. As time passed, his color palette became more vibrant, and his artistic style shifted towards a more ornamental approach, often showcasing elegant interiors and dynamic landscapes. He maintained a regular presence at the Royal Academy from 1898 until his passing in 1941, and his pieces were also featured in global exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale.
Harold Harvey's legacy is celebrated through numerous exhibitions, and his works are held in several prestigious collections, including the Royal Cornwall Museum, Penlee House, and the National Museum of Wales. His contributions to British art, particularly his depictions of Cornish life, continue to be appreciated and studied by art enthusiasts and scholars alike.

The print is absolutely beautiful. The subject is very colourful and will brighten any dull day.
I gave this wonderful painting to my beautiful wife for Christmas. She was born in Monaco just below the Jardin Exotique and we still go regularly as a family, and so when she unwrapped it on Christmas morning it brought back so many happy childhood memories. My wife has always loved John Dyers work and this piece will go next to one she already has of Larvotto.
Absolutely delighted..I missed out on the original art so decided to purchase the signed print. I wasn’t expecting it to be so good. I’m really happy with my purchase. Thank you it will look amazing when hung on my bedroom wall. It reminds me of my recent visit with my friend to Mousehole at Christmas.
Bright and cheery on a dull day.
This is our 6th painting by John Dyer. Several years ago I saw, and bought, a print of his painting for the 2014 Falmouth Tall Ships event, and fell in love! The paintings instantly bring a smile to my face. My latest is a true gem. I love the happy whales; my Husband is very taken by the Frolicking Mermaids! I refer to these paintings as my" Cornish Club" and I doubt it will be too long before another Club member arrives.
Absolutely delighted with my new print - perfect to cheer up a north facing room with its vibrant splash of colour and sunshine. Arrived very quickly - in time to take its place under the Christmas tree - and superbly packaged. Would recommend 100%.
I love these calendars and buy one each New Year. The pictures cheer me up!
Love this calendar
Great calendar
Bought for my parents for Christmas last minute and arrived on Christmas Eve ready for Christmas Day. Couldn't be happier with the Picture and with the service received and would happily buy from the gallery again in the future.
Beautiful! The colours & vibrancy in the painting are mesmerising.
The subject evokes happy memories & there is a general sense of fun & freedom. We love it! Thank-you!
Bought as a present for family who loved it and reminded them of their trips to Cornwall. Prompt delivery. Thank you.
I love these phone covers, always fit well and take the brunt of my phone carelessness! So nice to have beautiful artwork on the go, always cheers me up!
Small but beautiful. Their cheer gives me happy memories of my husband and my parents and lights up the room.
We first visited Holywell Bay about 10 years ago and absolutely fell with in love with the place.
So much so we've been lucky enough to visit back twice a year every year since. We first came across John work in St Ives a few years back and had
our eye on this painting for a while. It just captures everything we love about the beach. The joy, the sense of family, the feeling of the summer. The quality of the print is excellent. Feels and looks like the actual painting.
