Our artists' favourite beaches to paint
We have spoken with our gallery artists to find out which are their favourite beaches to paint and why.
Ted Dyer
Ted Dyer's work is inspired by a love of Cornwall's landscape, especially its seascapes, beaches and bays. He works mainly in oil on canvas but occasionally uses watercolour. His oils have an ethereal quality with a post-impressionist feel to them.
St. Ives
In his painting 'Soft Light and Summer Flowers' Ted captures the famous soft light of St. Ives. This area has historically always been popular for artists to paint because of the soft glow of the sand on the harbour beaches. One of the things Ted particularly likes about this beach is the colourful boats in the harbour.

Beaches of Tresco
"Tresco is one of my favourite places to paint as it's so beautiful and the weather always seems better there than anywhere else in Cornwall, with gorgeous blue skies"
Ted captures the beauty of the exotic flowers found across the whole island. His images of Tresco adorn many walls around the country and even around the world.

Castle Beach, Falmouth
Over the years Ted has painted some spectacular views of this beach in Falmouth. He captures the groups of families enjoying their cornish holidays, to perfection. The light seems to shimmer off of the water as the waves break gently onto the shore and sailing boats cross the bay in the background.

The coves and bays on the Helford River
It is the stunning flowers and glistening water that make Ted's images of the Helford Passage so spectacular. Boats sail along the river leaving patterns in the water and an array of colourful wild flowers wave in the breeze.

Godrevy
"I love painting Godrevy beach because it's so picturesque with its soft yellow sands backed by rugged cliffs. It's always full of people enjoying themselves too! It has a unique atmosphere and natural beauty."

Joanne Short
Joanne works in a much flatter style which has a print-like quality to it. Joanne's print, posters and original oils often feature beautiful, colourful flowers in the foreground which grow on the cliffs, riverside and dunes, with a backdrop of sweeping seascapes.
Helford Passage
'I absolutely adore painting the view of this little beach with its iconic pine trees towering behind on the hill. It has always been one of my go to places. The wild flowers which grow around the Helford River are stunning and something I am always wanting to capture in my paintings; Whistling Jacks, Campion, Cow Parsley, and wild daffodils, to name but a few. I have a vintage style poster of Helford Passage which is very popular."

Scilly Isles
The Isles of Scilly are a beautiful and unique island group located off the coast of Cornwall. They are well known for their stunning glistening white sand, crystal clear waters and relaxed atmosphere. The islands are also home to an abundance of wildlife, including rare seabirds such as puffins.
"Although it may be seen as cheating a little, I feel that I can't separate my love for the various beaches on these beautiful islands. If pushed I would say that I am particularly pleased my print of Porthcressa Beach, St. Mary's."

Portscatho, Roseland Peninsula
The Roseland Peninsula is a beautiful unspoiled area of Cornwall. It has dramatic coastal scenery with beautiful coves and cliffs.
"It is a joy to paint Portscatho beach and harbour. The colours in the sea are so clear, and there is always something going on"

St Mawes Harbour Beach
St Mawes is a small town and harbour on the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall. It is located near to St Anthony Head, which marks the eastern end of Carrick Roads. The town has been described as one of the most beautiful in Cornwall with its winding streets, picturesque cottages, medieval castle and a fantastic view of Falmouth's working port across the bay.

Newquay Beaches
Newquay is a town on the North Cornish coast, located in the county of Cornwall. The town is popular for surfing and other water sports. There are many beautiful sandy beaches around Newquay that offer great surf conditions for both beginners and experienced surfers alike and are fantastic to paint. These include Fistral Beach, Towan Beach, Porth, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth. Both Joanne and John enjoy spending time on these beaches with their family, enjoying some body boarding in the summer. John and Joanne grew up in North Cornwall, so are particularly fond of these beaches. After much thought, Joanne decided that her favourite is Mawgan Porth where she has spent many beautiful days with family and friends over the years.

John Dyer
John loves to paint the beach because it is such a happy place with much activity. Families and couples can be seen walking along enjoying themselves, often with their dogs. He often works on location in plein air whenever possible so that he captures the atmosphere of each painting's unique setting perfectly! He can often be found tucked away in the dunes or on the clifftop in his iconic white floppy hat, painting the view, filling it with his iconic fun and games as people enjoy their holidays.
Marazion and St. Michaels Mount
Although John has painted all around the world, he will still tell you that one of his favourite places to paint is Marazion and St. Michael's Mount. St. Michael's Mount is a tiny island which is located just off the coast of Marazion in Cornwall. It is a popular tourist destination, and for good reason. The Mount (as it's locally known) is a beautiful medieval castle which can be reached by foot at low tide, or by boat at any time. It is located on the south coast of Cornwall and sits right next to Marazion Beach which offers stunning views across Mounts Bay towards Penzance, Newlyn and Mousehole.

Holywell Bay
"The sunsets here in the evening make for some amazing paintings with their rich colours and soft light on the sand."
His beach scenes are always full of fun and games, as people enjoy their holidays in Cornwall. John grew up in Holywell Bay, so knows the area like the back of his hand; he loved spending hours as a child running around on this splendid beach and jumping and sliding down the spectacular dunes.

Pentle Bay
located on the island of Tresco, is a stunning beach with soft white sand and clear turquoise waters. It's perfect for swimming, sunbathing and snorkelling. The bay is also great for fishing, kyaking and paddleboarding.

John captures the beauty of this amazing sweeping bay perfectly in his painting 'Full moon over Pentle Bay', with the glistening sand and iconic agapanthas. Under a full moon, people play in the sea and ride bikes across the shore, which anyone who has visited Tresco will know, is a perfect island experience.

Gwithian
The beach at Gwithian is one of the most popular beaches for surfers. It's also great for families with its soft white sand, as well as being dog-friendly all year round so there are always plenty of dogs of all shapes and sizes running around having fun too, one of Johns favourite subjects. Surfing on a north coast cornish beach is one of the things that everyone should experience during their lifetime!

Mousehole
Mousehole is a small fishing village located on the south coast of Cornwall, England. It lies in Mount's Bay and is about three miles west of Penzance. The harbour at Mousehole is one of the most picturesque in Cornwall, with brightly coloured boats moored alongside. Mousehole is a pretty Cornish village with stone cottages lining its narrow streets. The main street leads to the harbour where boats bob up and down on their moorings while seagulls wheel overhead. John captures the beauty of this picturesque village perfectly in his unique, colourful style.
