John met this group during the expedition and they performed for him, becoming an important part of his experience of Pench and of the finished painting.

Throughout the work, John draws inspiration from the visual language of Gond art, particularly in the decorative treatment of the animals. The elephants and deer are filled with bold pattern, vivid colour and simplified symbolic forms, including the distinctive use of a single eye, giving them an almost spiritual presence within the forest.

The great Bengal tiger dominates the upper part of the painting, but look closely and its black stripes seem to merge into the trunks and branches of the trees. The tiger quite literally becomes part of the forest. For John, this carries a powerful message: no tiger, no forest. The animal is not simply living within the landscape; it is inseparable from it.

That idea of coexistence runs through the entire composition. Striped tiger butterflies move through the scene, plum-headed parakeets appear among the trees, and to the right of the smaller elephant is a sacred cow, another quiet reference to the cultural and spiritual life of India.

Even the landscape itself becomes symbolic. Leaves appear to merge into the water, while the water is constructed from leaf-like shapes and patterned marks, blurring the boundary between forest and river. Animals, people, trees, insects and water all flow into one another.

The result is not a literal wildlife scene, but a vision of a living system in which everything is connected. The tiger becomes forest, leaves become water, people become part of the jungle and the wildlife carries the decorative language of Gond tradition.

Filled with brilliant pinks, electric blues, intense greens, oranges and yellows, Land of the Tiger is both joyful and deeply meaningful: a painting about coexistence, cultural connection and the fragile relationship between people, wildlife and the natural world.

Item Information

Description

Framed Original Painting

Artist

Cornish Artist John Dyer (born 1968)

Signed by the Artist

Signed by John Dyer

Painting size

35.5 x 35.5 inches

Medium

Acrylic on canvas

Framed size

41 x 41 inches

Frame type

The St Ives style picture frame is a Renaissance-inspired cassetta frame, Italian for 'little box', featuring a white stain finish that highlights the wood grain.
